Best places to visit in Sicily the Nicolaci Palace in Noto
The plan is by Rosario Gagliardi but Vincenzo Sinatra also took part in the works as a sculptor. It is situated on the road which bears the same name and which is the most evocative in Noto because, besides being embellished by marvellous corbels which are allegorically sculptured, and which support the six balconies with thick iron grating it is also embellished by the Church of Montevergine. This creates a beautiful background and gives to the entire road a scenographic effect which cannot be equalled.
The corbels are the manifestation of the most extravagant and gaudy of Noto baroque, thus respecting the vivacious and fancy Sicilian ornamental tradition.
The anthropomorphous sculptures of the corbels represent: mermaids with loose hair falling on their shoulder, prancing hyppogryphs, rampant lions, sphinx with boys’ faces and puzzled expressions.
Beneath these allegoric sculptures, one may see a simple and linear facade with classical ornamentation.
Internally, the palace includes ninety rooms with three reception halls, upholstered in green, red and yellow respectively, and with seventh Century frescoes on the vaults.
A small garden in the internal courtyard enlivens the entire palace.
